No. Seriously.

Allow me to back track.

I saw my mother-in-law last Sunday for my daughters 2nd birthday party. I love my MIL. Over the last few years, I've come to understand her so much more that when I was first married. Maybe it's my own maturity, being a mom myself , or just the time it takes to develop a real relationship with someone, I don't know, but I genuinely love the woman. Recently, she has made a big effort to understand what I do, not just the actual function of my job, but what drives me, the down and dirty things I have to do to keep all the balls in the air and what I'm passionate about. Case in point: Sunday.

She arrives at my house with her usual bags of stuff: birthday presents, Valentines for my girls, and, for whatever reason, mail that continues to come to her for my hubby. In the pile she handed me was the JcPenny catalog. What the ...

Then she said, "Don't think I'm crazy, I thought you might appreciate their new marketing." What the what...

I don't remember the last time I walked into a JcPenny let alone shopped there. However, I was intrigued and guess what? She was absolutely right. The entire catalogue is bright, bold and fresh. About a dozen times I said, out load, "cute!" I'm a big believer that fashion and style should be accessible to everyone. What I loathe is retailers who are stuck in the past, assuming their customer doesn't know better, and that somehow, these customers are not worth the time and money it will take to update the company's image.

Marketing is a game, yes, but it's also, when done well, the first level of customer service. Showcasing merchandise in a pleasing, easy, fresh and educational way is the first step in delighting your customers. Let's take a look at some of the items JcPenney has to offer, because in all honestly, I would have never known if they didn't show it like this:

Yes.

They had me with the black and white stripe wrap sweater and skinny jeans. Looks real women, with real bodies and practical budgets can actually pull off. I love that they are just bold enough without looking ridiculous.

Yellow blouse + white pants + nude ballet flat = perfect spring outfit.

How good is that bag and it's only $30.00! BTW, that necklace looks supper high end and is $14.

Stacked bling. I am so on board.

In addition to some really pretty, fun spreads they featured the inspirational love story of Marshall and Winne Kuykendall (it is February after all) who have been married for an astonishing 83 years. They were engaged for 30 minutes and quickly, very quickly, eloped to New Mexico while Winne was still in high school. I'll always be a sucker for the "it's never going to last and then lasts a lifetime" kind of love story.

I've never been the biggest fan of Valentines Day. My boyfriend in high school very unceremoniously broke up with me on V-Day and for a good long while, I was one of those annoying people that claim it's a Hallmark Holiday. I almost fell off my seat when I came upon these gorgeous books by Alison Oliver and Jennifer Adams. What girl didn't fall head over heals for all things Jane Austin? I snapped these up for my 2 year old and for all of my friends with little girls the same age. There is also a Romeo and Juliet, which of course I purchased as well. On March 1st they are releasing two new titles: Alice in Wonderland and Jane Eyre. Alice in Wonderland freaks me out, but I already have a few copies of Jane Eyre pre-ordered.

The I Love YOU Book

A friend of mine I follow on Pinterest (aka the greatest site to hit the internet since Google) turned me on to Todd Parr books. They are lovely with bright illustrations and wonderful messages for the little person in your life. I liked them so much I ordered this for the girls and 4 of his other titles, including the I'm Not Scared Book and The Peace Book. Bonus: these are great for girls and boys!

High Style Under $100

Do you know what one of my style pet peeves is? A lovely woman, dressed for her day, with a ratty, ugly winter scarf around her neck. Makes. Me. Crazy. What's the point of putting any effort into getting dressed if you are going to mess it up with your scarf? It's the first thing someone sees when you walk into a room - make it count.

As with most things, you don't have to spend a fortune on a scarf. Let's take a look at some fabulous options, all under $100.

Announcing Style Maker University!

Since September, our team has been working on launching the latest division of our business, Style Maker University. Our very cool website is set to go live in about 2 weeks but I don't want to keep it a secret anymore, I've been quiet about it long enough. Style Maker U is a resource for aspiring and established personal stylists, teaching them how to service their clients appropriately and run a profitable practice.

Our first event, Introduction to Personal Styling, is geared toward aspiring stylists with little to no experience, eager to learn the process of working with a client. It's the perfect first step in building an image practice of your very own. It takes place on Saturday February 25th in our Ardmore, PA office from 10am - 12pm. I keep this on hand to take off heavy make up. It removes every trace of make up without tugging and pulling the skin and leaves your skin feeling like a baby's bottom.

This apparently has a zillion different uses. I just use it in the shower. I feels amazing and is super gentle on my sensitive skin. There a many different scents, lavender (above) and almond being my favorite.

Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser

I'm a huge fan of Fresh Soy Face Wash, will be forever. I ran out not long ago and had little interest running to the mall to hit up Sephora. Since I needed something immediately, I popped into Target and grabbed this. I was really surprised how much I liked it - really, really surprised. It doesn't remove your make up as well as Fresh but I was having a bit of a hormonal break out and this cleared things up within a day or so.

Closets are for Clothes

I have to admit, cleaning out someones closet is my least favorite activity. It is simply necessary in the process we use with our clients. We can't get you new clothes or make use of what you have if your wardrobe is hidden under a layer of dust, your gym bag, a bowling ball, kid's toys and items that were once clothes and are now rags. So we have to clean it up first. As the young man to the left said, quite perfectly, "closets are for clothes, fabulous, fabulous clothes."

Generally, it's hard to shock me and when it comes to matters of peoples wardrobes, I'm confident in saying I have seen it all. The one thing that continues to puzzle me, however, is the burning desire many clients have to hang on to items they cannot wear. Garments that are damaged, stained, and worn out beyond repair often become a topic of major contention. It is hard to get past the emotional attachment we have to our things, I get that. If this is the case, keep a separate box for sentimental items. If you can't bare knowing you spent money on something and never wore it, just remind yourself, you already spent the money. You're not using it either way so it may as well go to someone else.

To get you started, I wrote up 10 steps to get your closet in order. Do this first before you buy another garment in the New Year and you will save time, money and a lot of aggravation in 2012!

1. Give yourself time. Schedule uninterrupted time with yourself to begin the organizing process. Make sure you eat something, put on some fun music and be comfortable. Do everything you can to avoid distraction.
2. Set up. Have everything you need in one place so you don't get distracted and lose motivation. I like having a rolling rack handy, a notebook and pen, plenty of trash bags, and a few empty laundry baskets.
3. Empty your closet. It will seem daunting in the beginning, but it's necessary. Take out everything until it is completely empty so you have a better sense of your space.
4. Clean your closet. Actually clean it with warm water and mild soap, give the floor and corners a good vacuum. Dust will destroy your clothes so do your best to respect your investment.
5. Sort. Now that everything is out begin to sort what you have. Everyone knows the categories by now: KEEP, MEND, DONATE, TRASH. I place the keepers on the rolling rack; put the clothes to be mended in a laundry basket to be taken to the tailor; and designate a bag for donations and one for trash. It's also a good idea to keep an additional basket for laundry: you'll be amazed how many clothes need a good washing.
6. Be ruthless. If it's stained, ripped and beyond repair - trash it. If you don't like it and the condition is okay, donate it. Action items that need repair. The grey area, where most people struggle, is items that are just fine, but for some reason sit in the closet, unworn. Only keep something you love and can't wait to wear, that fits properly and works with your current wardrobe. If it doesn't meet all those requirements, donate it.
7. Take a break. By this point, your space is going to be a mess so clean up a bit, take out the trash, put items for the tailor in your car and move the donation bags out. Once you regain order you'll be able to keep going.
8. See what's left. This is the fun part! Now you get to play with what you have left. Try on different combinations; write down things that you like together so you remember how they worked and make a list of what you still need.
9. Set up. Now it's time to put everything back. Matching hangers is the easiest way to create visual order in your closet. I love the slim line hangers from Bed Bath and Beyond. In addition to saving a ton of space they make everything uniform ... you'll stand in front of your closet opening and closing it just to see how nice it looks. Aside from hangers, try to save money and use items you already have in your home: baskets for scarves, trays to keep jewelry in place, hooks to hang bags, belts and necklaces. Unless you really want to, there is no reason to spend a fortune on organization items. If you need a few things I like IKEA for practical and affordable solutions.
10. Going forward. Put your shopping list in order of priority. Decide what you will get the most use out of first and go from there. For example, if a white button down will create 3 outfits from what you already have, that becomes a priority. With regular maintenance, you'll never have to start from scratch again. I usually give my closet a quick clean up once a week when I put my dry cleaning away, it takes about 5 minutes, and the results are always worth it.

How to Be Happy - The Happiness Project - Be Happy in 2012

Don't get too excited, it's just a book recommendation. For Christmas my brother's beautiful girlfriend, Jess, gave me The Happiness Project, by Gretchen Rubin. Can I just say how much I love receiving books as gifts? I also love it when a gift is something the gift giver remembers about you. In this case, Jess and I were on my patio months ago hanging out, drinking wine, when she mentioned how she just finished this book and how much she liked it. We talked about it for a bit, I said I should read it and that was it. So I was delighted to open it on Christmas.

I mentioned before about my bizarre habit of thinking the only way I can be successful - or deserving of success - is if I work myself to the bone. It's my most unhealthy habit and it took its toll on me last year - emotionally, physically and mentally. It's hard to be happy when you are exhausted. This year, instead of making resolutions I know I won't keep, I'm making a commitment to myself to chill the hell out and just be happy. This book came at the perfect time.

It's hard to read this at first and not be convinced you are becoming a bit of a narcissist. As women, we often think we need to give up our happiness in order to "do the right thing" and take care of the people around us. The truth is, happy people make a positive impact on the lives of the people around them and the world at large. Now that I'm a mother, the only thing I want is for my girls to be happy and the only way they'll learn that is by watching me.

The book is written in a great conversational tone so it's easy to get on board (after you get over the narcissism thing), the author is painfully honest, relatable, just plain funny and extremely well researched - the girl knows her stuff. I was happy to see that I do a lot of her recommendations already, I just needed a reminder on many and a new perspective on others. Some of the lessons I took from the book that might help you kick your New Year off in the right (and happy) direction:

1. Declutter. I'm a neat FREAK so I completely understand the correlation between clutter and stress. Some people get so use to the mess they don't even know they are stressed until the clutter is gone. So, over the holiday break, I kicked my compulsion up a notch and clean every corner of my house. I labeled every toy bin, sock drawer, linen closet and our basement. I purged anything I didn't need or use. It felt amazing. Take it one step at a time and soon you won't be able to stop yourself.

2. Finish unfinished tasks. This was great. There were a few projects around our house that needed to be finished - a light switch that was never installed after we remodeled our kitchen ( 2 years ago) and proper window treatments in our newly remodeled bathroom (you don't even want to know what we had hanging in there). My hubby took a few hours and finished everything - we both felt great when it was done. Even if it's just a few picture frames that need to be hung, any little thing will make you feel so much better.

3. Give Proofs of Love. Basically, be nice to your husband - or boyfriend/girlfriend/partner. I'm a doll 905 of the time, but the other 10% I'm pretty awful. Work, kids, stress, general annoyance at the world - when I reach the end of my very long rope, my poor hubby is usually at the other end. Now, he's no saint, but he's a fantastic husband, so I need to get a grip. Speak kinder, be more forgiving and get over petty nonsense that doesn't make a difference in our life together. Give kisses and hugs in abundance - nothing bad ever came of that.

4. Take time to be silly. I get so preoccupied mothering: making sure everything is organic and non toxic, breaking up fights, potty training, managing temperaments and shuttling them back and forth that I forget to just play. Using my imagination the way my kids do is one of the easiest ways to drestress and be happy.

5. Be a treasure house of happy memories. This might be my favorite tip because it works instantly. After I take our Christmas decorations down my house usually looks naked. This year, I filled every table, shelf and wall with pictures of our family and friends. It's hard not to be happy seeing glimpses of the life we made all around us and how we have grown up together.

6. Give back. This one I added. One of the lessons we try to instill in our kids is if God has blessed us it's because he (or she) knew we would bless others. Financially contributing to non profits is important, but my kids don't see that. This year we are getting involved as volunteers too so they know how important it is to give back and take care of others. It's hard not to be happy knowing you are positively impacting someones life.

On Thursday my daughter had her Christmas concert at school. She goes to school with her cousins so we make it a big family event - I mean BIG, there were almost 40 of us for 3 little kids to sing a few songs, including my 87 year old grandma, my aunts and uncles and the kids grandparents and aunts and uncles. As I was sitting in the auditorium, I became completely overwhelmed. Here was my girl, sitting next to her cousins on stage, singing the same songs to the same people I use to sing to. But now my brothers were the uncles, our parents the grandparents ... it was a beautiful full circle moment. When I thought about everything that had to go into all of these people coming to see this little production, the time off from work, the almost hour or more they drove, it was yet another reminder of what is really important in life and all I have to be thankful for.

I spent a good part of this year stressed out. Like so many Americans, I started to think that the only way I could be working hard was if I was exhausted and overwhelmed. As if I didn't deserve success if I wasn't always plugged into work. I also spent a good part of the year worried about people who made it abundantly clear that they cared very little for me and my family. As I sat at the Christmas concert it dawned on me (like a brick hitting me on the head) why am I wasting my time on nonsense when I have all this? There is no point in stressing out about things we cannot control, working to the point of collapse, and fretting over people who don't want you in their life. I know we hear this sort of thing all the time, but this week I understood it at a different level.

It's amazing, once I stepped away from my day to day work and routine, I started to feel more like myself and became very clear on things. I don't remember the last time I was this excited for Christmas. My kids are so on board with it, I can't help but get caught up in their joy. I hope you are able to make some time this week for the ones you love, put aside your stresses and spend it with the ones who fill your soul.

Lord help me. My friend Amanda told me about Pinterest months ago. I spent about 2 minutes on it and left. "Who has the time?" I thought. Apparently, I do as I quickly found myself back on the site and completely obsessed. In all honestly I have discovered lots of interesting blogs, found dozens of recipes I actually use and loads of ideas for our home, things to do with the kids, and style inspiration for myself and clients. The Elf on the Shelf ideas alone made my time pursuing this site worth it.

My best purchase of 2011. I debated this purchase for months. My fear was that I was going to spend all that money and end up with a big gadget. It's not. This beauty has saved me time and keeps me incredibly organized. I use it for work constantly, and play on Pinterest when I'm in between meetings. I don't know how I lived without it.

Fashion Focus Friday: 100 Unforgettable Dresses

For my birthday my mom gave me 100 Unforgettable Dresses, by Hal Rubenstein featuring 100 gowns from modern history. Some made jaws drop, others defined moments and a few are just simply beautiful. I LOVE it. It's a definite must have for the history of fashion loving gal in your life. The pictures are exquisite, and the stories about them are remarkable. It's basically a behind the scenes look at how the dress came to be, antidotes from designers and little known facts about the decisions around the making of the dress.

The book features the usual suspects. The holy trinity of style: Grace, Audrey and Jackie all get a few pages. Risk takers like Jennifer Lopez in her plunging Versace Grammy gown and Cher at the Oscars both earned a spot. What makes the book interesting, aside from the stories, are all the unexpected dresses I was truly delighted to see, like the yellow dress Ann-Margret wore in Bye Bye Birdie (when I saw the movie as a kid I thought she was the prettiest creature on earth), the a-line dresses from That Girl, and Stevie Nicks in all her goth goddess glory.

As I was pouring over the book I was so excited to see so many of my favorites.

I love anything you could wear as easily now as you could 50 years ago. Grace Kelly will always be my favorite of the style trinity and this will always be my favorite gown.

I remember watching The King and I as a kid and wishing one day to have a place to wear such a gown.

The dress that made Liz Hurley a household name. I love her for having the guts to wear this. We should all be so bold once in our life.

When I saw this for the first time I clearly remember thinking, "She is way out of his league." Talk about coming into your own ... look at her!

In 1992 the Oscar was Julia Roberts to win. She was the front runner, everyone knew it, and she came looking like a movie star about to win an Oscar in Vintage Valentino. Perfection from head to toe.

I had the privilege of seeing Alexander McQueen's Hologram Dress at his exhibit at the Met. It gave me chills. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in my life - and I'm not being an once dramatic.

It's actually one of the worst wedding gowns in history, but it sure made a statement. I loved it as a little girl though, and can still hear my mom say - "it was too much, and needed an good iron." My mom is rarely wrong about these things.

Quite the contrary, this is one of the most beautiful wedding gowns in history. I've said it a zillion times, and I'll say it again, this is what a bride should look like.

3 Way Thursday: Tuxedo Jacket

I've been using a lot of tuxedo jackets in clients holiday looks this season. They come in handy when you are attending an event with an undefined dress code. Aren't they the worst? One person shows up in a ball gown and another is in a holiday sweater (gross). Your best bet is to land right in the middle and be festively chic. Somehow, the same tuxedo jacket can dress up an outfit as easily as it tones one down.

OFFICE PARTY

I love a poppy punch of color surrounded by neutrals. This look is well balanced and clean. Depending on the "dressiness" of the night you could replace the shoe with a simple nude in a patent leather. One of my clients bought this exact shoe in silver for her holiday events and she has loved wearing them.

COCKTAIL

I really love this look. Throwing the blazer over the dress tones it down by a thousand percent. The shoes and bag play off the little neutral beads on the dress and the Alexis Bittar earrings - well, they're perfect.

JEANS

This is what I would wear to a holiday party or dinner with friends. I don't care if it's black, I like black, my clients like black, it's chic and sophisticated. What's not to like? Keep the sparkle as an accent instead of head to toe. Be sure your pants have a nice break to them if you are going to do the skinny jean with heel look. Otherwise you'll look like you are wearing a dressed up capri. *Shivers*

Life Lesson: Company Holiday Party Fail

Your company holiday party can be the most dreaded social event on your calender OR an awesome way to connect with co-workers and get some great face time with your boss. This time of year, you'll find etiquette experts listing tips to make a great impression at these shindigs. I have a lot of respect for these experts, what they teach is important, especially since most people lack in the manners department. I have, however, read some of these articles and wondered what sort of parties are they going to? Most of the tips focus on knowing the salad fork, how to shake someones hand and reminding you to write a hand written thank you note. All great tips, but really? How formal are these parties. I can't remember a holiday party that ever involved a sit down meal.

Any corporate holiday party I've attended has been based around a bar, at either a local pub, trendy night spot or an executives home. In any case, booze is your biggest culprit. This post is geared toward my younger readers, as a heads up on how to navigate the night. It's also a good reminder to the rest of us, because we all know inappropriate behavior doesn't just come from the young kids in the office.

1. Know your limits. The truth is, nothing forms a bond faster or fills an awkward silence better than sharing a cocktail with someone. So if you do enjoy a drink from time to time tonight is not the night to go dry. It's also not the night to revisit your college years and scream "shots for all!" Set a limit, one, maybe two, and be done with it.

2. Fake drink. When I was a young buyer, vendors would take our team out the night before a big meeting. Most of the times, it was a bunch of guys and these guys wanted to party. As a young 20 something who knew better than to get into a compromising position I couldn't think of anything else to do. I didn't want to come off uptight and I certainly didn't want them to find me sick in the bathroom. Nothing was more annoying than the pressure to get another drink from a grown man I was doing business with. I eventually learned to make nice with the bartender and asked them to make mine just cranberry juice. I don't recommend this as a strategy, just keep it in your pocket in an emergency.

3. Pick up the first round. If you are going to a cash bar party (tacky, BTW) pick up the first round. This does two things. It shows you're a cool chick with enough class to know social "rules" AND it keeps you in control. By doing this, you paid your dues, made a good impression and are not obligated to engage later on. This also means you should get there early, or at least on time so you can get into position at the bar. Make sure you close your tab after that round too. Yours truly has been left with some hefty bar bills before I learned better.

4. Get some time in with the head honcho. A big part of my success has come from my ability to chat up everyone, including people of authority. With that, I've found that talking to an "important" person like they are one of the gang can be incredibly effective, just do your research and know who you are dealing with. At my last office job I was chummy with a few executives because I knew what they cared about. So ask them about their kids, hobbies you know they like, the college they went to, etc. Remember that everyone loves to talk about themselves. You'll make a bigger impacting listening to them then rattling off next years projections. Be casual and respectful. WARNING: this approach does not work with what I call the "executive narcissist." This is the person who expects you to and wants you to kiss their ass. I generally avoided this person, my charm rarely works on them.

5. Be mindful of time. Whatever you do, do not monopolize your time with said honcho. A few minutes and you are cool. If you have the opportunity, be sure to gracefully end the conversation with an "it was so nice to speak with you" or "this is a great time, thanks." Whatever you do, do not talk their ear off, you'll annoy him/her and the people around you.

6. Be nice to everyone. A great general rule that needs a reminder every now and then. There is something about the whole office being out of the office - especially when there is booze involved - that can lead to more drama than usual. Women often feel the only way to get along is to engage in gossip or negative talk. That's simply not true and dangerous to your career (and your moral code but that's another post). Be neutral, be nice to the people you like and if there is someone there whose every move annoys you more than you knew possible, just be courteous.

7. Under no circumstances do you, ever .... go out afterwards with this crowd. Just a bad, bad, bad idea. Trust me.

8. Keep your love life to yourself. I'm grateful to only speak from friends experiences and not that of my own on this one. This all goes back to the booze and keeping it at a minimum. You don't need to be doing the ugly cry, in the bathroom of a pub, over a Mr. Mr. in front of the EVP ... for instance.

9. Be mindful of who you bring. I'm married to the most easy going guy ever so I never worried about him making an ass of himself. I did, however, worry about him being bored out of his mind so I rarely brought him to these dreadful things unless it specifically invited spouses. I just felt like he was something else to manage, and he was cool with that. I have witness some epically inappropriate behavior from significant others and friends that are talked about to this day. The unfortunate reality is whomever you bring is a reflection on you, so if your significant other is a live wire or your best friend dresses like a stripper, you may reconsider inviting them along.

10. Have cash on you. For any number of reasons, like tipping the valet, bartender, waitress, splitting the bill (if that's the deal) and for the unexpected like having to park in a garage that doesn't take credit cards (I HATE that) or getting someone a cab when they've had too much holiday cheer.

When you spend most of your waking hours with the people at work it's hard not to get comfortable. Maybe you love your coworkers. Maybe you tolerate them because its a job with steady pay. In any case, this could be a great casual networking opportunity, and a great way to form strong(er) relationships with the people on your team. By keeping your wits about you, you can do that, have a great time and build your own positive reputation.

Girls Rule

This picture is of my daughter Maddie right around the time she turned 3. See her shirt? It says, "Girls Rule" and if you are not up to speed on female superheros that's Batgirl, Wonder Woman and Supergirl. I wish they made this shirt in my size. I would buy one for each one of my girlfriends, because girls really do rule. I just wrapped up a fantastic weekend with some of my dearest friends. Girlfriends hold a lot of power. We've all had ones who broke our hearts, fake ones who dragged us down and ones that slipped away. Then there are the ones who fill us with love, pull us up and stay by our side forever. The power they have can change our lives - it certainly changed mine.

When I look at my friends now I wonder how I ever lived without them but believe they showed up exactly when they were suppose to because I don't think I would have been ready for them if they arrived any sooner. Moments in life fascinate me: all fly by but some change you in that instant. Think about your girlfriends, the ones that impact your life and make it better, make you better, the ones you drop everything for, the moment you met was simple and so powerful.

A real friend doesn't expect perfection, they love you despite of or because of your issues, they call you out on your crap, defend you, support you, make you funnier, instinctively know when you need them, they make you cry it out and tell you when to put your big girl shoes on, you can sit with them for hours and not have to speak and they believe in you when you don't believe in yourself. Who does this for you? Who do you do this for?

I remember once getting into an argument (that's probably too strong a word since we didn't actually argue) with one of my best friends years ago. The whole situation was my fault, I did something careless and unintentionally hurt her feelings. I felt terrible when I realized she was upset and so disappointed in myself. For a moment I worried that now she knew I wasn't perfect so she wouldn't think of me the same. When I said this to her she said the greatest thing to me, "You are my people, you are my insides, we are always okay. Sometimes I'm gonna upset you, you're gonna upset me, we're gonna deal with it and it's over."

And that's what we did, it was over. What she said changed my life for the better. It showed me real friendship, gave me confidence in our relationship and taught me how to communicate like a grown up.

My kids are my reason for living, but they're not suppose to be my girlfriends. My husband is the love of my life, but he's not a girl and will never understand the way my mind operates. Finding real female friends, who don't engage in drama and caddy nonsense is so hard to find, but when you do, value them, because their power makes you powerful.

So go text your girls, the ones who know your deep dark places and still see the beauty in you and tell them you love them, tell them they are fabulous, tell them they rule.

All Hail the Long Sleeved Wedding Gown!

When I was in college I worked very briefly at David's Bridal. Not my most glamourous of jobs but if I have a few cocktails I can tell some funny stories. My time there helped me realize I never want to work with brides professionally. Ever. Because brides, generally speaking, are batsh*t crazy.

At the time of my unfortunate employment strapless dresses were becoming really popular. *Sigh* It was ugly, because everyone wanted to wear them, even when they didn't have the body for it. I can name a few, just a few brides I have seen look AMAZING in their strapless gown. One of those brides is my friend Amanda who writes the popular blog Chasing Twins in Louboutins - she was a flawless bride. Other than her and a hand full of others, it's a lot of boob, it's a lot of pulling up the dress every 5 minutes, it's a lot of back fat. No one wants back fat on their wedding day.

Which leaves me more than delighted to see the increasing popularity of a wedding gown with a sleeve, because strapless has become so boring and just isn't appropriate for every body type and in 20, 30 years you'll want to look back on this dress and still love it, from every angle of the camera.

The one trend I'll be happy to see picked up from Twilight.

J Crew Holiday

I have always liked the idea of J Crew more than the actual experience of shopping in the store. I find the store, at least the ones I frequent, to be sparse, picked over and lacking of any sort of interesting merchandise. There are usually 4 tables of folded cashmere sweaters, and ... that's it.

Yesterday, however, I could have bought a dozen items and if i wasn't getting in line to see Santa with my kids, I would have. It was the J Crew I always thought they should be with lots of fun, sophisticated and preppy pieces for any style.

Time to Transition

Dear Reader,

I'm heading out to my last client before Thanksgiving and the only thing I am looking forward to doing tonight is soaking in the bath, a luxury I rarely indulge in and having a quite glass of wine with my hubby. It's been an interesting year, and while I think I am one of the luckiest people I know, with so much to be grateful for, the pace of this year has been relentless. On New Years Eve, as the ball drops, I'll be relieved it's over. However, I never want to wish away time so with just a month and a few days left in 2011, I'm making a mental shift and focusing my time and energy on the things that really matter, my family, my great friends and work I really love.

The holidays seem to bring so much unnecessary drama. A time of year that should focus on all we have to be grateful for and the promise of a New Year is often overshadowed by family drama and politics. This year my family made a conscious choice to do what is best for our little gang and spend the holidays with the people who we value and who impact our lives on a daily basis - we are calling this our "Drama Free Christmas." I am so looking forward to it.

One of my dearest friends, Neen James, taught me to use what she calls a "trigger", something to signify transition. Whether it is the drive home from work to take you from your work mind to your home mind, or a glass of wine in the evening to move you from a day at home with the kids to a grown up night with your spouse, you need to do something to indicate the shift you are making. I love this idea and have used it in so many areas of my life. It helps me stay present in the moment and not feel so frantic. Hence, soaking in the bath tonight.

As the holiday season begins, with it's outrageous commercialization and pressure to be everything to everyone, I hope you are able to have your own moment of transition and enjoy the season as you like. I am so grateful for you and your support this year.

Animal Flats: Three Ways

I decided I could not live another day without an animal print flat. I've been searching for the perfect pair since the beginning of the season and have been disappointment with the selection and style of every one I tried. I realized I am, without question, my worst nightmare of a client. I don't like anything, have unrealistic expectations and no patience. In short, I'm a major pain in the ass.

That said, if you are going to wear a flat, you want to maintain some fluidity in your look (i.e. helping the line of your body look long and lean) so you need a pointed toe shoe. There is no getting around it. Rounded toe flats chop the line of your body off at an awkward spot. Finding that perfect point has been a challenge. The fact that every designer wants to mimic Tory Burch's signature flat, with that horrible and painful elastic band around the back of your foot, left me more than frustrated. Adding some ridiculous bow or buckle to the top of the shoe, which is limiting and distracting, had me contemplating a career as a shoe designer so I could get what I wanted: a simple, clean, pointed flat with a modern (not tacky) animal print.

I'm sorry I didn't posted much last week. I had 9 clients in the last 7 days, that's a lot considering how much time each one takes and how much prep I do. If you are anything like me your inner prep star is over the moon about this fall. I've never found a striped sweater I didn't love and this one, with it's golden stripes, is no exception. Of course, you can wear this with jeans, but a navy skirt, long strand of pearls and neutral heel could take you to work as well.

I was shopping for a client yesterday and picked this up on the sale rack at Nordstrom for moi. I LOVE faux fur as an accent, always have. I remember when I first started working I bought myself a fantastic burgundy suede wrap coat that had a giant grey fur collar. I wore it home and my mom just gave me a look like, here we go. It didn't matter, I thought I looked fabulous.

Anyway, fur, much like animal print, is a great way to add glamour and texture to your look, but in major moderation. I like this particular sweater because the color is neutral and the collar is removable. It's a nice alternative to the often overdone faux fur vest.

PSA: The Mad Men Look

Let me start by saying that no one, NO ONE, is more excited, delighted and relieved to see women starting to dress like ladies more than moi. Showin' off your curves, playin' up your femininity and plain old dressin' like a girl ... this is me, giving two enthusiastic thumbs up.

But, of course, there's a but ...

It's running the risk of looking a little costumey. And costumey on the wrong person makes them look crazy.

I am all about you not looking crazy.

You may have noticed ads by Banana Republic featuring some of these looks:

I actually really love these pieces both singularly and as an outfit.

And I get it, this is an ad, it's editorial, bla bla bla. The issue is that I've been working with busy women for years now with little to no interest in fashion. "Editorial" means nothing to them. They want to look nice, appear fashionable and don't care how I get them there. They are going to take this look literally. I call these women Mannequin Shoppers. They see what the mannequin is wearing and buy the entire outfit.

These are my clients, and I love them.

They are also going to have a very quiet meltdown over the red lips.

I'm already hearing a lot of "should I be doing that??"

So ladies, it is okay and very much encouraged to like this look. It's simply a matter of taking it down a notch. The shape and play on textures in these outfits and in so many you will see in the fall magazines is really fantastic. Obviously, you're not wearing wrist length leather gloves to the office or wrapping a scarf around your head. My advice would be to pair the clothes with really modern make up, hair and accessories. (I should say, in these BR ads, the shoe choices are very modern, it's the hair and make up throwing women off.) No french twist, no red lips, and instead of the very proper pearls opt for a funky long chain necklace or cuff.

My modern take and mantra on dressing is all about balance and contrast. From a silhouette perspective, you want to balance your shape. From a style perspective, especially if you are playing with a very specific look like this one, it's about contrast. Play a super feminine 1960's piece against a current, modern one for visual interest.

It is these years, when she lived in New York with her teenage children, working at Viking and Doubleday that intrigue me most. Last night I began reading Jackie as Editor, and just kept reading and reading and reading.

In addition to learning more about her obvious love of literature and how much her previous life gave her experience for her new role, this book gives wonderful personal accounts from more than 100 of her former colleagues and collaborators. I've always enjoyed learning how Jackie operated, known for her class and grace, she was able to use these skills to finesse her world and was a natural born networker. As a business woman, she was smart and savvy, loyal to her authors and passionate about her work.

All this is shown against the back drop of who Jackie was: walking, living, breathing history. That's what I love so much about this chapter in her life. As she lived in a 15 room apartment on Fifth Avenue, the former First Lady and wife of a billionaire, who certainly didn't have to work, was seeking out her own identity and legacy. Isn't that the case for so many women? We dedicate our lives to the ones we love, often make sacrifices perhaps in our careers to care for loved ones or life just gets busy and next thing you know everyone is okay and functioning on their own and we are left wondering:

"What's my life about?"

Perhaps this connection is what Jackie loved about books. Somehow, through words, we can be connected to each other, learn about the human experience and see how people we never knew, even those as other worldly as Jackie, share in our journey and help guide us to our own self discovery.

I know it's why I love them. As for Jackie, she fit a lot of living into her life. After reading this book, you may be left wondering about the next chapter in yours.

As a stylist, I hear the same 5 complaintsfrom new clients all the time:

"I hate to shop"

"I get overwhelmed"

"I can't figure out how to pull itall together"

"I don't see styles in stores thatare right for me"

and

"I'm in between sizes, how am Isuppose to shop?"

Let's talk about that. With outquestion it's the hardest challenge. It's also very common. Two of themost common scenarios are actually being in between sizes or being in theprocess of losing weight. Let's break them both down.

In between sizes: This is where your size falls downthe middle of the size scale. An 8 may be a tad tight, but you feel likeyou are swimming in a 10. If this is the case, and your weight is stable,you need to focus on alterations. Some of our clients use minimal tailoring,a hem or dart here and there, while others require significant amounts to maketheir clothes work. It all depends on their body type. If you aregoing to need a lot of tailoring, set aside 15% of your budget to cover thecost. And remember, everyone has their "thing." There'snot a client in our book that can breeze in and out of a dressing room withoutsome sort of extra step. Whatever you do, DO NOT enter into the juniorsdepartment. You are not a junior, you are a grown woman and wearing anoutfit made for a 14 year old will make you look crazy.

Planned Weight Loss: This is where things get tricky. If you are trying to lose 5 pounds, just deal with the annoyance as you losethe last bit of weight. Five pounds will not change your size, it willjust make things fit better, so don't go out and buy a new wardrobe. Ifyou are losing a significant amount, more then 10 pounds, it's a bit of a dance. First, realize you are going to have to buy some clothes to get youthrough. Looking and feeling pulled together is only going to help keepyou motivated.

Buy a few items that fit you wellright now and make sure the lines of the garment are clean and straight. You are going to also utilize alterations, but in a different way. As you lose the weight, take the items in to be tweaked. Likelyyou'll need a waistband brought in, or a jacket pulled back. By keepingthe lines of the garments straightforward, you'll ensure a straightforwardalteration (and less expensive). Avoid prints and patterns, like a pinstripe;it's difficult to keep the pattern in tack. As a general rule of thumbyou can alter a garment down about 2 sizes before you ruin the integrity of the fit, so once those back pockets looklike they will touch, it's time for a new pair of pants.

Buy inexpensive tops, jeans, and knockaround items. Look to stores like Old Navy or H&M. These itemsyou won't want to alter. For your core wardrobe, like trousers, skirtsand jackets, buy a slightly better quality so they can take the alterations butdon't go crazy. You'll have to live with less but it's only temporary. Tokeep things interesting play with accessories, scarves, etc. Also,dresses are a great option to feel pulled together while you get to where youwant to be.

Old Navy The Flirt Boot Cut Jeans $27.50I make no secret of my love of designer jeans and admit that's where I spend my money. After my daughter Ava was born, I need something to get be by and ended up loving these. I still buy them as knock-around-the-house-with-the-kids-jeans.

Old Navy Tie Front Wrap Dress $29.50I've mentioned this dress before. A wrap dress is the greatest fashion invention, ever. It adjusts to your body as you need it to so you don't have to fuss with alterations. At this price point you can wear it until it falls apart and not feel like you made an investment.

Halogen Taylor Trouser by Nordstrom $49.90

Mostof our clients have this pant in their wardrobe. It's affordable, and hasa consistent fit. This is the trouser you buy and then alter as you needto while you lose weight. The quality is great but the price tag is low. And, I have to say this, NEVER wear your trousers this short; they needto be a good 4 inches longer, you shouldn't see your shoe. They should bea 1/4 - 1/2 inches off the ground.

New York & Co Sheer Embellished Tunic$39.95

A tunic is a great option when you are losingweight because it covers up any trouble area and gives a slim silhouette. You can find these at better price points, in different fabrics and tonsof colors. Just be sure it is slim to your body, anything too big willoverwhelm you and wear a slim cut pant to balance the look. (Meaning astraight leg not a boot cut)

Otherstores to consider:

Lordand Taylor - for day/work dress when they are on sale

H&M - for under pieces and trend focused items. They run small.

OldNavy - probably my favorite for casual and active wear, also sweaters, dressesand coats.

One last thing!

Every time you lose a bit of weight and need to take your clothes in for a nip, get resized for a bra and make sure your undergarments fit properly.

Common Sense Advice for Young Job Hunters

I receive dozens of emails a week inquiring about, asking for and down right demanding a job (no joke). After 5 years as a business owner I'm still astonished by the lack of professionalism and even common courtesy in people who should be trying to make a positive first impression - especially in the field of image and style - it's sort of a requirement. Here are some does and don'ts that might not be listed in all those "How to" articles all based on what I see in my inbox almost every day:

1. Use the right name. My name is Megan Kristel, it's all over my website and Google. If you start an email with "Dear Kristel" I do not read another word, I delete it, immediately. You could be telling me I won a million dollars, I'll never see it.

2. Don't start your email with, "I don't have any experience, but ..." I get this all the time. Seriously, why would I hire you? Give me something, anything, to help me see that while you might lack in experience you are a committed hard worker.

3. Avoid the urge to talk about your friends. "My friends tell me I should do this." Means nothing to me or any hiring manager.

4. Include a resume. Do I really have to say this? Apparently, because 80% of the job seeking emails I receive do not include one. I received an email not long ago that simply said:

"I would be a great asset to your team, I'm great at what I do. If your interested give me a call at "

Just so you know, I copied and pasted that directly from the email, spelling errors and all, which I keep in a file for the book I will one day write.

5. If you are savvy enough to send a resume don't fill it with lies. I didn't lie on my resumes, I figured I would be caught or karma would prevent me from getting the job I wanted. However, it's assumed that most resumes have a few embellishments. Just know that (1) employers do check references, if your reference chuckles when I ask her about your many accomplishments, you're toast, and (2) hard work is hard work, if you were someones assistant - that's hard work, takes skill and shows you are willing to pay your dues. We all started somewhere, I'd rather give that person a shot then someone who made up b.s. accomplishments.

6. Have realistic goals and expectations. I once had an applicant tell me she needed to make between $80K - $100K per year. She had absolutely no styling experience, no networking experience, and no client book. If you are so far off in your expectations, I assume you have no common sense. No common sense = no chance.

7. Ask for an informational interview. Many business owners are more than happy to talk or meet with someone looking for information about a particular industry - I know I am. I've been fortunate in my business and am really happy to help someone else, it's like good business karma. However, if you are lucky and find someone willing to help you must show up on time, be courteous and prepared with your questions. Don't think for a minute about rescheduling or god-help-you canceling. Be sure to send a thank you note, on real paper, little things like that leave a lasting impression and the business owner is likely to think of you if an opportunity comes up.

8. Learn to Network. Networking built my business and the connections I made the first few months of putting myself out there are now my friends and colleagues who I turn to all the time. Networking, however, is not about you, it's about what you can do for others. Focus on learning as much as you can about the people you meet. I can't tell you how many truly crazy people I had coffee with, but for every 5 crazy people there was 1 fantastic and meaningful connection. Eventually, I met enough people and built enough relationships that I was able to make introductions and give referrals. Also, if someone takes you under their wing, and I am fortunate to have had a few wonderful women do so, never forget them, always do right by them and pass the generosity forward as you move through your career.

9. Dress the part. My friends in HR have the most hilarious, ridiculous, head scratching stories about what people show up in to interview. The craziest and most popular choice of attire - pajama bottoms. Don't be an ass, get dressed and dress well. Unless you show up in a ball gown you can't be over dressed.

10. Work. Your. Tail. Off. When you get that first big break, show up early, stay late, take on extra projects, and fix problems don't create them. Have an unmatched work ethic. Make yourself indispensable.

Bonus 11 Never Burn a Bridge. Maintain your relationships, it's a very small world. Stay conscientious and do the right thing, people are watching all the time and don't easily forget things. A solid reputation is your most valuable asset.

Baby on Board

Don't get excited, not me. My kids are currently on a campaign to keep us a two kid family.

I do love having babies. I love anticipating their arrival, dreaming of who they will be and I really love the first few days and weeks after they arrive. When my babies were newborns they were easy peasy, and in those first few weeks I would just sit and stare at them. I was so overwhelmed with love I just wanted to inhale them. I was exhausted, painfully overwhelmed and recovering from c-sections. It was also the most magical time, so much so that I sometimes wish I could go back for a day and have them that little again.

Being pregnant thought, not so much. I have no patience so the moment I had even a hint that I was pregnant, I wanted to meet my baby. I wanted to skip all the gestation and get the parenting party started. I was also irritated that I couldn't have a cocktail (terrible, I know), I was rapidly gaining weight, and my type A nesting instincts kicked in so strong I was found by my husband one afternoon sitting on the kitchen floor emptying all of the spice jars and cleaning them with a toothbrush. It was bad, but my house was immaculate.

The worst part of pregnancy, even if you are one of those saintly women who loved every minute of it, is getting dressed. It stinks. The good news is there are a few things to keep in mind and resources you can use to get by so you can look and feel stylish:

1. Only buy what you need when you need it. This goes against every one of my instincts but it's true. Your second and third trimesters are unpredictable, you gain weight in odd places or your needs might change. I was on light bed rest with Ava and told not to be on my feet for most of the day which meant no client appointments for several weeks. Overnight I went from needing maternity dresses to leggings and sweaters.

2. Invest in a great pair of jeans. Most maternity clothes are disposable. I have found, regardless of price point, the quality difference between a jacket at A Pea in the Pod and Target is minuscule. Jeans, however, are worth the $100 + you'll pay. The more expensive ones look better, keep their shape longer, and you'll get the most use out of them, even after the baby arrives.

3. Beg, Borrow and eBay. Babies, kids, family life ... it's all expensive. Take the money you would spend on fancy maternity clothes and put it away, for baby food, college, or a new wardrobe when this ordeal is over. Borrow clothes from girlfriends, utilize consignment shops and (what I did) go on eBay. I was the first of my girlfriends to have babies so there was no one to borrow from, I hit up eBay for a few special pieces and found the designer pieces I wanted without the heavy price tag.

4. Work with less. This was the trickiest part for me. I did spend some money on 2 suits that mixed and matched, a nice pair of trousers and 2 basic dresses. If you are working and going right to the end, like so many of us have, you need clothes for work. I was happy I did, I had limited options but still looked professional.

5. Think outside the bump. Instead of just buying maternity specific clothes look for pieces that will adapt to your new body and will help with the transition back to your old. A wrap dress is the best option. You can dress it up, or down, and by changing a shoe you can make it appropriate for the season. Also, use the accessories you already have. Keep your maternity pieces neutral for maximum versatility and change the look with a necklace, scarf or an amazing pair of shoes (as long as you still have your balance!)

Resturant Review: R2L

In between the earthquake and Hurricane Irene (and the tornadoes she brought with her) my hubby and I were able to squeeze in a date night with one of our favorite couples. We love going out with them because they are hilarious, down to earth and Amanda (who happens to write the popular Chasing Twins in Louboutins blog) and I love getting fancy. As I get older I notice it's difficult to find people in the same place in life who take the same approach and have similar values. (AND who are nice to restaurant workers, I can't tell you how many people I stopped hanging out with because they were rude to our waitress or tipped terribly) Luckily, we have these two - and they like to eat good food.

Amanda picked the restaurant, so she gets all the credit. It was really wonderful. Admittedly, I thought it was going to be a little more hype then quality. Much to my delight, I was wrong. The restaurant is beautiful, the food was delicious, and the service was impressively attentive without being overbearing.

R2L is located on the 37th floor of Two Liberty Place in the heart of Philadelphia and offers the most spectacular views of the city. We originally planned for Saturday night, however, we moved it to Friday do to the impending storm. Our reservation was for 7:30 and we were seated immediately.

We scored a booth with the best view of the city ...

I should have thought to take pictures of our meals but I was so relaxed I wasn't thinking. We had cocktails and noshed on Grilled Truffle Flatbread (OMG so good) and the BEST Lobster Mac and Cheese I have ever had. For dinner the girls had Filet Mignon (even though I technically stopped eating red meat, I had a weak moment, it was worth it). My hubby had the Red Wine Braised Short Ribs and Amanda's hubby had the Horseradish Tuna. We ate everything. I can't remember what everyone ordered for desert but I had the warm vanilla cake with carmel sauce. It tasted like warm cake batter ... mm mm.

So, if you live or are visiting Philly definitely put this on your list. It's a great place to celebrate a birthday, special occasion or, in our case, just a grown up no-kid dinner with friends. Their bar is also lovely - cool and modern without any gimmicks and offers a happy hour on Monday - Thursday from 4:30 - 6:30.

Aside from a great meal, it's just so nice to get out of the mundane daily routine, get dressed and act like young(ish) people. I was feeling really run down from the summer with the kids, renovations in our house and work. Just a few hours in a pair of heels and champagne with good friends left me feeling a little like my old self.

How many times have you walked by someone and thought, "Do you know I can see your underwear??" I still can't decide if they are blissfully unaware or so resolved to not caring that it simply does not register under inappropriate, because no one could possibly think it's okay to leave the house like that. Let me clear this up now, it is inappropriate. In this ridiculous age of anything goes, understanding what is and is not appropriate will get you far. At a minimum going to work, an event or even to the market with your cheeks hanging out, your thong showing, the outline of your underwear for all to see or things just jiggling all over the place is

(1) gross, (2) inappropriate, and (3) easily fixable.

VPL. First, turn around and do a behind check before you okay your outfit. I've been in enough closest to know most women do not have a full length mirror. Go get one. Next, you may need to change your style of underwear. I swear by Hanky Panky, in the original cut. I find their low rise option too low, the originals are very comfy, they last and leave no outline. Of course, because of their popularity, everyone has knocked them off but the impostures do not keep their shape or wash as well.

Backside Exposure. You know what I'm talking about. You are casually walking down the street and - whoosh - your skirt blows right up. Having had this happen to me one too many times I keep it in mind when I'm getting ready and have found a pair of short spanx is the best solution - it keeps me looking slim and helps in the modesty department, just in case. I find these particularly helpful under wrap dresses and other breezy lightweight dresses.

When I was fresh out of college I started my career as a buyer of women's fashion at a small speciality store in Philly. We would head to the showrooms in NYC and pick out the items we thought our clients would love and watch as the shipments filed the store. I loved every minute of it but should mention this "process" is not actually how buyers buy, we had a tendency to fly by the seat of our pants. To this day, that time in my career was what prepared me for my work today. It gave me valuable insight on the life of a small business owner, it showed me how UNglamorous it would be and how much hard work it would require ... for some reason I still wanted to do it.

It also gave me a vast knowledge and understanding of brands. I say it all the time, especially to young women interest in this field, this job as little to do with fashion and everything to do with what our client needs and how to get it for them. One of those brands I was introduced to all those years ago was Eileen Fisher. At the time, Fisher was cut full, often shapeless, but her fabrics and colors were so beautiful. She took a very Donna Karan approach to wardrobing, everything worked together, season after season.

Today the collection still holds to the principle of practicality while looking sleek and modern. Fisher is not my personal style but I love it on the right person and have been known to integrate it into a clients wardrobe in unexpected ways. The pieces are on the expensive side, however, I can say from experience it is one of the few brands that actually last - you'll have them a good 10 years. And, let me say this, most of the time these clothes are not work place appropriate. Their lack of structure makes them look too casual. Our clients who buy Fisher tend to be self employed or in the artistic fields. That said, she has some gorgeous pieces this fall that could work with any style:

Okay, $30 may seem outrageous to spend on salt, I know, but this is such a treat and transforms your meal. I've used it on potatoes, seafood, white pizza and a little on dinner rolls with butter. You just need the tiniest sprinkle to transform your meal. Mmmmmm

Mason Pearson Hair Brush
One of the only purchases I've made recently to give me pause. I can usually rationalize anything, but really?? A $100 for a hair brush? I finally caved when I was wondering around the Anthropologie in D.C. I'm so happy I did. This brush is amazing - AMAZING! I have long hair which tangles easy and can appear dull. This feels a bit like someone is massaging your scalp, and leaves your hair conditioned, full and super shiny.

Living Proof Hold Flexible Hairspray
Speaking of hair, this is the best. It's not sticky or stinky, your hair stays soft and still styled. Especially great if you pull your hair back and want to tame fly aways.

Skinny Girl Sangria
I had this for the first time on Saturday night. My brother and his girlfriend were over for dinner and they brought this along knowing my love of all things Skinny Girl. I might like it more than the Margarita. It was perfect for a leisurely night out on the patio.

I bought these in the tan option about a month ago and I'm still shocked buy their comfort. Weekends are the only time during the week when we can enjoy a (sort of) quiet morning so I like to make something easy but delicious enough so everyone actually sits and has seconds. I was laying in bed this morning wondering what I could make and thought this up. Nothing groundbreaking, just a take on french toast casserole that doesn't need to soak overnight or bake for an hour. Start to finish, this took 35 minutes.

All you need is:

1 day old Challah

6 sausage links - use any kind you like, I used chicken apple sausage

6 eggs

1 1/2 cup heavy cream (you could use half and half, I just happen to have some cream in the fridge)

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1/2 tsp good vanialla

pinch of salt

Preheat the oven to 375

Brown the sausage in skillet, leaving them slightly undercooked. Whisk the eggs, cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and salt till it is frothy. Roughly tear the Challah into medium size pieces.

Spray your baking dish with nonstick, add chunks of bread and pour liquid over it.

Cut the cooked sausage and tuck them into the casserole. Cut up small pieces of butter and drop them on top, about 2 tablespoons.

Bake for 25 minutes and serve with warm maple syrup.

Barefoot in New York

My idol, hands down, is Ina Garten, better known as the Barefoot Contessa. I credit her with not only inspiring my love of cooking and entertaining and teaching me how to do it, but also giving me moments with my daughter Maddie, who loves to cook and just be in the kitchen as much as I do. We religiously watch her show, and pour over her cook books together. It's become our thing, Mad casually refers to her as just "Contessa" and ponders what she would do in certain culinary situations. It's pretty adorable.

"Contessa" does no wrong in my eyes from her scrumptious food, to her perfectly "Hampton's Style" Hampton's home, to her warm and easy personality. I worship her. So I was thrilled to come across an article in House Beautiful featuring her NYC apartment which shows her personality exactly how I think (hope) it really is: smart and charming.

Accessories make your outfit, they add that second level of thought that makes something to wear an expression of your style. The challenge is they are often an afterthought. We spend so much time and money on clothes that sometimes the budget runs out, or we run out of time. Having spent more time in women's closets than I care to calculate, I've noticed many women have accessories, nice pieces, pieces they love. However, they are in a jumbled mess, crammed in a tiny box or thrown in a drawer. By the time they get around to adding a necklace or bracelet they are late for work and it will take a good 40 minutes to work out the knot in their chain.

The solution? Well, it's an obvious one. Get organized. Get organized in a way that will work for you, your life and your space. If you see your accessories, you will be inspired to try new things, you will wear them and you will begin to get value from your purchases. Soooo, I thought I'd share how I keep my items tidy. I do not have a large closet, or a very large bedroom, so I had to get creative.

I have a nifty 6 door Ikea closet system which I love. When I was picking out the components I opted for one of the sections to have 3 shallow drawers for my jewelry. You could use a top drawer of a dresser, or a small drawer cart on wheels and keep it in a hall closet or bathroom. Remember, be creative.

Then I filled the shallow drawers with jewelry trays from Bed Bath and Beyond. The one above allows me to keep my more delicate necklaces out and untangled.

They also have square trays with small compartments that, when stacked, click together and slide so you can see what you have quickly. As you can see on the back of the door I hung my long necklaces on 3M hooks, these are on 3 of the 6 doors, by length and color.

I keep special occasion and seasonal shoes in clear boxes. This way I can see them but the are protected from dust and my daughter playing with them. I tuck them in the back and keep some of my favorite bags in front so they are easy to reach.

I used one of the shallow drawers to line up my small bags. I use these all the time so they need to be in reach. My large and seasonal bags are kept in baskets on top of the wardrobe.

One of the square trays is used to drop my every day pieces. I tend to wear the same rings and earrings so having one place for them ensures I'm not running around looking for my wedding ring or studs.

Bracelets are lined up, so again, in a quick glance I can see what I have.

I'm not big into scarves but I have a few special ones I love. I tuck them neatly into a basket.

Take a few minutes to sort and store the items you have and I promise you will get dressed with ease and look perfectly accessorized.

From now on, I'm talking fall. Yesterday I was so happy to have a few hours to stop by some of my favorite stores to prep for my fall shopping appointments. Is it fall yet? While it's still hot on the east coast, retailers have been stocking up their cooler weather merchandise for weeks. It always happens this time of year, I open my closet and think, "I either have nothing to wear or I am really, really bored."

Summer is my least favorite season to dress in, the fall on the other hand is my most favorite. Tweed, cashmere, boots and silk ... I can't hardly wait.

A big and fantastic trend for the fall is the bow/ tie front blouse. They have been a favorite look of mine for years and are just picking up mainstream steam. Which means you will be able to find them in abundance and at all price points. They are a versatile addition to your work wardrobe. Books on Love

I was married at 23. That's practically still in utero by today's standards, but I was in love and fairly mature for such a baby. When I was engaged I started reading books on how to stay married (have you figured by now that I am a tad obsessive compulsive?), I was determined to have a great marriage and wanted to learn everything I could about what to expect, because I was no fool, even at 23 I knew it wasn't always going to be rainbows and shooting stars

In September we will be married 8 years - I'll do the math for you, I'm 31, we have been together for 13 total years and have never been happier. It's not perfect, it's not suppose to be nor could it ever be considering we are two different people on life's journey together, but it's peaceful and lovely, warm and loving and it took work on both of our ends to get to this point and will require us constantly adjusting and learning from and about each other on a daily basis.

I'm fortunate because I married a sensitive, kind hearted, generous, deeply conscientious man, who happens to be very handsome and makes me laugh. He's still a royal pain in the a**, he still leaves his crap everywhere, steps over piles of items on the steps instead of taking them up with him (how do they not see it??) and we still bicker with each other, we will till the day we die, that's just us. That's all okay, because he likes to learn as much as I do and believes his greatest responsibility as a man is to create a happy, healthy family with his wife. Yes, I hit the jackpot. I also found some resources early on that helped us learn how to communicate with each other and taught us how to live as one while staying who we are as individuals. These books are life changing. Whether you have a spouse, partner, boyfriend/girlfriend or just want to understand how to better communicate to the people in your world, these three books will help you do just that.

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work

This is one of the books I read when I was engaged and I've probably read it a dozen times since. It's filled with practical and realistic insight. The author talks about his work as a therapist and how, after years of analyzing couples, he could tell from a quick conversation if they wanted to and would be able to "make it." He would ask them to recall how they met and the early days of their courtship. He said if they looked back on that time fondly, with joy and happiness, they could make it through whatever they were dealing with. I think of that from time to time, and realize I still get giddy thinking of our "story."

His Needs Her Needs

This book is probably a great resource if you are rebuilding your relationship after an affair. It's also helpful to use in a proactive sense. I'm on board with about 80% of what this book recommends. I love the idea that if I make his needs a priority and he makes mine his, then our needs are always met. Now, that's not always going to happen, but it's nice to have goals. The author talks a lot about "love tanks" - a gage to track how loved we feel in our relationship - and gives advice on how to fill your spouses. It's a brilliant idea, my husband and I now (jokingly) ask how the others tank is doing all the time.

The Five Love Languages

This could be the formula to a happy marriage, as long as both partners are on board. According to the book, once you know your partners love language, the dynamic of your relationship will change for the better. It's so simple and still so hard. The languages are Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service and Physical Touch. Eventually, I figured out that we share a need for Quality Time and throughout our marriage we always had date night once a week. We didn't stop that when our kids came along, but we realized we needed different kind of time together. Now, we take quick trips with each other every few months in addition to our weekly dates, where it's just us, no screaming kids, laundry, and emails going off every five minutes. We come back connected and feeling like ourselves.

Don't Sweat the Sweat

For years now one of the most common questions I get from clients isn't about current trends or skirt length, it's about sweat:

"I sweat a lot and don't want to ruin my clothes."

"I'm so embarrassed, I stain my blouses and jackets."

"Is there anything I can do about this??"

Now, I'm no doctor, so I'm not about to give out medical advice. Excessive sweating could be a sign of an undiagnosed medical condition so a doctors visit may be in order. However, if you spend a lot of time under hot lights, react strongly to the oppressive summer heat, or sweat when under pressure - all very common reasons - there are a few things that may help protect your clothes and give you back your confidence.

Certain Dri

I've been recommending Certain Dri to clients for years. When I first began my speaking career, I don't know if it was the hot stage lights or my out.of.control. nerves but I was a sweaty mess. Half way through a presentation I would realize I couldn't lift my arms up. I can't remember who told me about Certain Dri but I'm so grateful for it. You can purchase on their website or at your local drugstore. Pick up both Certain Dri and Certain Dri AM. Basically you put CD on at night and in the morning but on CDAM. It works. I never worried about sweating on stage again.

Garment Shields

If you sweat when wearing layers, be sure to add an underarm shield. Even if the sweat stain is removed odors can linger and there is nothing worse then odor stuck in the lining of your blazer or in the underarm of your cardigan. You won't be able to get it out and your garment will be ruined.

Tahari Cotton Dress

It reached 104 degrees here last week. How in the world are you suppose to dress for that? For starters, skip the synthetic fabrics, they don't breath and cling to your body (gross). Wear natural fibers like the dress above. Avoid clothes that are tight on your body, have the shape skim your body or opt for a flowy skirt.

Finally, be sure your clothes fit. The biggest challenge when we sweat is trying to avoid the under arm staining. Often, I see women wearing a dress or a tank that cuts them too closely under their arm. You need room to breath so do not buy an item if the arm hole of your garment cuts you.

Monday Menu

I thought it would be fun and helpful (and a welcomed departure from fashion) to share my weekly menu to give a little inspiration to busy women trying to feed their crew. Is there any feeling I dread more than not knowing what to make for dinner? Um, no. So I try to pull together an idea of what we will have every night based on what I have in the pantry and our crazy schedules.

Below are some of the meals that got me through last week, which turned out to be a busier week than I had initially planned. I would post what we are doing this week but my kids are going to my parents house while I visit our D.C. area office, so other people will be feeding us!

Meatless Mondays: Fried Zucchini Spaghetti this has easily turned into my go to summer pasta, it's SO good, my kids love it and don't realize they are eating a veggie. I am lucky if any of the zucchini make it into the spaghetti, they are delicious right out of the pan with sea salt.

Tuesday: Chicken Ravioli with Spicy Sage Butter Sauce Whole Foods has great frozen ravioli that I keep stocked in the freezer, but use any kind you like. This sauce is not low in calories but you only need a very little drizzle, cut the salt to 1/2tsp, the 1 1/2 tsp she calls for is entirely too much. I also used Parmesan, because that's what I keep in the fridge. I picked up a local fresh baguette to dip in the not so good for you sauce, and a glass of chardonnay, mmmm.

Wednesday: Fresh Flounder with Barefoot Contessa Watermelon and Arugula Salad A perfect summer meal,delicious and light!

Thursday: Panko Crusted Chicken Tenderloins with "Fancy" Baked Potato
No real recipe here, just something I pulled together one night looking for a healthy spin on chicken nuggets and fries.

Pick up a pack of Chicken Tenderloins, salt and pepper them, dip in 3 egg whites then dip in Panko Flakes (about a cup or so) seasoned with a little garlic salt, pepper, and dried oregano. Lay on baking sheet lined with parchment and bake for 25 - 30 minutes (depending on size of tenderloin) in 400 degree oven. Serve with your favorite dipping.

Bake your potatoes however you like them, in the oven or on the grill. I always pierce the skin, and cover in olive oil, salt and pepper. Bake until soft. Top with salt, pepper and a tiny scoop of mascarpone cheese or soar cream, my daughter thinks the cheese is super fancy and sprinkle with chives.

Friday: Baja Style Shrimp Tacos Let me say, first, this maybe one of my favorite meals and you absolutely need the hot sauce. It's ridiculously good. Second, the homemade salsa is the easiest, most delicious you can make and insanely simple. You'll never even consider buying a jar of salsa again. I once made this for myself, my husband, my brother and his girlfriend. By the time I had the tacos on the table they had cleared the salsa.

I usually make a separate dinner for my husband and I on Friday nights as we need a little grown up time together and our kids are spent from a busy week and hit the hay pretty early. This past Friday, however, we let our oldest stay up with us to watch the "World Premier" of Phineas and Ferb, The Movie. I was a little worried she wouldn't like this but she ate every bit. We spread a blanket out in the family room and picnicked. We ended the night with home made s'mores, it was a perfect night.

High School (Reunion) Style

We've dressed many clients for their reunions, some more formal than others but usually it's a low key affair. You want to be comfortable and feel amazing. Keep it simple, modern and if you have to pick up a few pieces or a whole new outfit be sure they are pieces you can drop right into your current wardrobe. Remember, now is not the time to try a new look, keep to who you are, just the best version.

I'm assuming you want to show up looking effortlessly chic so I started with my most favorite jeans (EVER), Hidden Hills, by Paige Denim. They are soft and comfy, with a higher rise so you won't hang out of them, and they come in a dark ink blue, which will make you look and feel slim and will dress up the outfit. You will wear them all the time, I promise. A neutral twill blazer with one button is casual while still pulling the look together, and the lightweight Theory shell has just enough ruffle for movement and interest without overpowering the look. I often go for monochromatic, it looks more modern than prints and patterns however you need to be sure it incorporates texture or the look will be flat. Admittedly, I went off the deep end with the Jimmy Choo heels, they're expensive but divine. The suede balances the weight of the twill blazer and I love the detail trim. Because this look is all about playing with texture and neutral shades I added a slim lizard embossed clutch by BCBG and gold tone accessories by Kenneth Jay Lane - a go-to for glam pieces at better prices.

I don't spend a tremendous amount of time online for the simple fact that I am easily distracted and slightly obsessive - I could spend all day reading blogs, browsing sites, and online shopping. So I limit myself and created a morning ritual. Before the kids get up and I start my real work day I grab a ginormous cup of coffee, browse the news to make sure the world is still functioning, stop by Facebook and then enjoy a few moments of quite with these fabulous sites:

To say I am obsessed with Habitually Chic is putting it mildly. It's an incredibly well done lifestyle blog, updated daily by it's creator Heather Clawson. I just love her perspective and atheistic and if she wasn't based in NYC I'd hire her in a minute to update my home. I find myself sort of mindlessly browsing her archives in a grand display of procrastination. She's releasing her first book in the fall of 2012 - I can't wait to see it!

I don't remember how I came about this delightful blog but I'm so happy I did. The Zhush is filled with inspiration from design and decor to art and fashion. It's worth it just to check out her feature called "Random Chanel Item" - my favorite is the double "C" holiday wreath.

Every Thursday the GOOP newsletter, created by Gwyneth Paltrow, lands in my emails and I open in immediately. It's filled with recipes, travel tips, product recommendations and style tips. She's come under some criticism for it, with naysayers claiming the advice is frivolous and impractical. I couldn't disagree more. I've made my family many of the receipts featured on the site and they are wonderful, created an entire itinerary for a trip to Chicago based on one of her features and bought some lovely health and beauty products (from London) that are organic and natural. One of their more recent features was on stress and it was filled with valuable information. Be sure to check it out.

It features amazing designers and personalities from the lifestyle world. I'm sure, if you are into serious decor pieces, this is a little slice of heaven. For now, I stick to accessories, small pieces for my bedroom and lovely gifts.

I love the idea of vintage and I love using vintage pieces in my own wardrobe but I hate the process of finding it.
